ABC nails Exxon and DCI for fake youtube video trying to discredit Al Gore. Exxon is making record profits (9 billion per quarter). This is how they spend it, denying the reality of Peak Oil?! Well, what do you expect…
3fheGgu4cJg Kudos to ABC and WSJ (!) for reporting this.
Oh and “Astrotubing”? You heard it here first. Well.. maybe not.
A great article in the Register lists ways Windows disregards the users’ needs:
Restarting the computer, closing open documents without saving - despite changing prefs to prevent this.
Modal dialogs pop up after an IE download finishes; user keystrokes go to the dialog and close the window.
The bit about popping windows is huge. My favorite peeve is how a menu selection gets interrupted by a popup from another application. Sheesh. Didn’t they learn anything from Apple?
I’ve been asked before if I follow the TV show Numb3rs… I always figured it was cheesy numerology. But this clip showing visualization of social networks looks pretty good. I’m torrenting the old episodes now.
What are other good geeky shows - I like Good Eats and Mythbusters. Hard to top those.
I read the bombshell about Django like everyone else, and want to raise a point: this is a good thing for the python community as a whole. The reason is the Paradox of Choice.
The more funds employers offer their employees in 401(k) retirement plans, the less likely the employees are to invest in any, even though in many cases, failing to do so costs them employer-matching funds of up to several thousand dollars a year.
When reviewing server logs, I often want to get information about an IP address. I copy the IP, then go to DNSStuff.com and put it into their IP Info form. DNSStuff has loads of good tools, but IP Info gives me city, country and WHOIS info.
To save the trip of going to the site, I’ve written a search extension. IPInfo will install in your Firefox search bar:
Maybe copy and paste is too much work for you - it is for me! In that case, use SearchWith. SearchWith lets you right-click on selected text and choose from the available search engines.
Python Challenge - Difficult but fun web challenge. I want to try to finish this..
lpy.py Literate programming in python - produces HTML docu mixing code, commentary. Very interesting. (but yet another markup to learn)
NearlyFreeSpeech.net - pay $1/GB as you go - A “major slashdotting” of a site hosted on our service will cost you (on average) about $10, one time. With python, ruby, perl CGI.
There are T-shirts, hats, mugs, etc. The shirts on the official store are awfully expensive, I think - the least expensive is $23, before shipping.
Goodstorm is a new site with much lower base prices than CafePress. I’ve created a store there. Without any markup, the python logo shirt is $8.40 for a men’s fitted T.
I’ll be getting a laptop sticker and a couple t-shirts. So if you see a bearded geek around Harvard/Porter square with a python sticker, say Hi
